About the selection of the format

The quality of the transfer depends substantially on the camera you use (mono or tri CCD, the resolution of the CCD, the lens) and also on the recording format (IMX, Digital Beta, DVCpro 50, digital S and Beta SX are the best). Attention: the recording format must absolutely operate in the PAL system!

A considerable step of quality can be reached with cameras that record in progressive mode (25P). In this case you get a resolution of 625 lines what is very close to the 720 lines considered as High definition.

Chose the aspect ratio 4:3 or 16:9 on your video camera. The 16:9 corresponds to an aspect ratio of 1:1,77 which isn’t a standard in cinemas. During the transfer, we therefore have to cut the picture slightly either on the left and right sides to reach the aspect ratio 1:1,66, or on the top and bottom to get the 1:1,85 ratio. (Attention: the 16:9-mode of some cheap cameras is calculated with a bad interpolation program and is not recommended!) It is also possible to shoot in 4:3 aspect ratio and to cut out a picture in 1:1,66 or 1:1,85. However, this will lessen the quality of the transfer..

During the screening in cinemas the picture will be cut by about 2.5% on all sides. This is particularly important for the positioning of titles and subtitles.
